Ugh, ugh ugh.
But whhhhyyyyyyy.
Insane comment as to this being racist. As a sociology and culture student the fact that someone considers this racist blows my mind. It’s like me calling someone of native american heritage racist if they ever decided to wear a top hat because it was the clothing of my forefathers. It is a head dress which has become part of popular culture, something which is uncontrolable. Cultures have converged. This isn’t a statement as to the modern person of native american heritage looking remotely like this anyway. They’re just normal people. Like me. Or the girl in this photo. She’s simply wearing an item which has some historical symbology but once again- top hats. Or in fact the English Language we so happily write in. Culture fusion, it’s not a bad thing.
Even worse someone has the audacity to reblog it complaining about racism, alongside a gif singling out white people. You know something simple, want to stop racism? Stop identifying race in such a blunt way. We can’t be equal until we choose to be. Now I know there’s history but it’s a two way street. I may as well be blue for all I care. My race- human.
A top hat is not commonly known as a sacred item. Top Hats are hats. Headdresses/Warbonnets are sacred items with long histories behind them.
Culture Fusion would be wearing moccasins with jeans, two everyday wearable items mixing together! Not a sacred item that is still important in the many tribes that wore headdresses.
Jeepers, I’m scared that you’re a sociology/culture student and you’ve never heard of Cultural Appropriation.
I DON’T SEE IN COLOR U GUYS
^
I dunno about you guys, but this is how I interpreted sameoldromance’s staggeringly ignorant and misinformed addition to this discussion.
“As a sociology and culture student, I am too intoxicated by the smell of my own farts to understand that the two-bit education I’m currently receiving from the University of No One Gives a Fuck has not provided me with any real insight into the lived experiences of People of Colour. Witness in awe as I deliver yet another half-cocked argument that everyone’s heard before, fully expecting it to be recognized as profound wisdom”
Also, I am smug douche.”
It’s obvious that you don’t understand how people outside of the Western/European archetype adopting a top hat does not serve to perpetuate a gross misconception about white European people based upon racist stereotypes of savagery and primitivism. You are also completely ignorant of the importance and symbolism of the Chief’s Headdress. This has not, however, prevented you from justifying your erroneous position on racial relations in the modern world with this false equivalency.
Despite your vast knowledge of the intricate mechanisms of the world, and the wisdom you have been given as Student of Something, you have also failed to recognize that the power dynamic between the dominant cultural paradigm (being, in this case, American ‘pop culture’ *) and the cultures subjected to these appropriative acts (this being Plains Natives specifically and Native Americans generally) make true convergence impossible. Instead the subject of this appropriation is sideswiped completely and relegated to the status of a symbol.
This is probably because you are actually completely ignorant of the subjects in which you profess expertise, and you can definitely be safely ignored.
Only a white person has the luxury of willfully ignoring racism and expecting that to be some kind of solution. The rest of us have to contend with it daily, so kindly go fuck yourself
*or as some like to call it: “the white capitalist patriarchy”Thank you in every single way. How hard is it for people, rich privileged fashion designers with 5 ipads and 7 iphones, to google something before they decide to use it? If they took the time, about 5 seconds (less time than it takes to order a mocha-frappa-latte), this wouldn’t be happening right now.
I’m not a rich, privileged fashion designer with 5 ipads or 7 iphones. I did research it. I took more than 5 seconds and after I still wanted to take the photo. I’m from England and don’t use tumblr much. I have not seen until now that clearly this is a big issue in America with tumblr hipster sort of girls being offensive/racist. It’s never really been seen as fashionable or ‘indie’ here, this was just taken because I saw a photo by Justyna Neryng http://justynaneryng.co.uk/ who won this years Royal Photographic Society’s competition and I thought it was beautiful. I found this hand made headdress and wanted to take a photo of my friend in it. It is an unprofessional photo. I am sorry if it has offended anyone, it was completely unintentional. I have deleted the image but it obviously won’t go away because people keep reblogging it.
